The Historical Side
I love history, especially that of North Carolina, and have been active as a historical interpreter in the Colonial and Civil War periods for several years. One of the goals of Pyatt's Herbs and More is to make available herbs that were once common in kitchen gardens but are seldom known today. Look for herbs such as costmary, elecampane, clary sage and soapwort in the Products section under dried herbs, along with more familiar culinary herbs and some recently-developed varieties. I continually search eighteenth- and nineteenth-century cookbooks and herbals for information on how herbs were used in the homes of our ancestors. The results of this research are made available to my customers in the form of historic herbal products and written information and also in presentations of herbs and their historical uses. Throughout the year I attend historical reenactments and mueum events at which I both demonstrate the many uses of herbs in houeholds of the Colonial and Civil War periods and sell period-appropriate herbal and craft products. You can see my calendar under News & Events.
... & More
In order to be of greater service to the historical community, Pyatt's Herbs and More also offers a variety of non-herbal but historically-oriented items. We offer a fine selection of books related to herbs and their historical uses as well as to the history of America and North Carolina more generally. Other "sutler wares" include decorative Scherenschnitte items and other period crafts, a selection of period clothing, and other items useful to historical reenactors and interpreters as well as to teachers, kids and anyone else who is interested in experiencing hands-on a bit of life in the past.
About Medicinal Herbs
Please note that my presentation and interpretation of herbs focuses on the uses of herbs throughout the household, and that information on medicinal uses of herbs is presented solely for historical interest . I am not a certified herbal practitioner and am completely unqualified to give advice on the many medicinal uses of herbs, or to recommend what historic uses might be valid today. (Some might actually be harmful.) Please see your local doctors and trained herbal practitioners for medical advice.
